I think the president would like to share this with the whole Club, rather than just with the Committee.

On the whole, I think we can be pleased that we have two well-balanced CL4 teams. CL4.1 won narrowly* against one of the lower-placed teams from last season, Centrals, and CL4.2 lost narrowly* to the CL4 premiers from last season, Checks.

*”Narrowly” is, of course, a comparative, as opposed to absolute, term. In this case, it is used to compare the result of one team (let’s call them “Checks”, for the sake of this example) scoring, say, 15 goals and the other team (to which, for the current purpose, we will assign the name “ANU CL4.2”) scoring a statistically insignificantly different number of goals – nil, for example. The Club statistician can perhaps explain the complexities of the advanced statistical treatments that should be applied in these instances to demonstrate that, for all intents and purposes, ANU CL4.2 actually won the game and that the points gained by Checks are, in reality, a statistical aberration or outlier.

5th grade round 1, ANU vs Unic, 28/3/2009
ANU 6 defeated UniC 0

B&F

1st: Peter Meadows
2nd: Jason Lee
3rd: Harry Slayter

Goals

Peter Meadows 3, Jason Lee 3

A great start to the season despite the arduious journey to the sands of Tuggeranong, that seemed to claim the lives of two players before the whistle even started things off.
We dominated the game from toss to stumps, with the toss going our way and pretty much the rest of the game to boot. We dominated the Unic 23 metre box all game, and Goggles the keeper was really the only credible threat in the UniC defense. He made some lovely saves but the torrential assault from veteran Spud, and new faces Jason Lee and Harry Slayter forced goals of attrition to rain down. Spud was triple teamed by UniC and Kenny was being very aggressive at the back. This tested the calm from the front, but the umpires made it clear they weren't going to stand for it, and Spud continued to have his way with the attack. He was well supported by a solid midfield line up of Rob Lavis playing centre half in the first period and new recruit Junaid Yamin having a run in the second. Eight years away from the game might have sapped Junaid's stamina but his skills were clearly evident, with some good traps and mindful passing.
Unic made a handful of flurries at the circle and managed to get themselves a few corners but couldn't convert. We must have scared them by half time, because their side went from 10 men to 8 after the break.
The Valleys umpires made their beligerance clear with the clock already running down to 33 minutes before the hit off. That said, that was all that could really be said about the umpiring, with few dodgy calls affecting the result.
Considering half the team hadn't played in ACT senior hockey, we all meshed very well, and are looking forward to another good result next week.

What a team! 13 players with 8 new to the club and from the get go is out there with combinations, cooperation, calling and passing!!! Unheard of I know – but if we can keep together and build on the beauty that has been – 2009 is our year!!! (not to jinx us from the out set but you know, I get excited!)

Goals to Stuart Gardner and Paul Scott and B&F vote didn’t happen because I’m a lazy fill in captain. Cal – we need you.

Round 2SAT4-Apr2:00 PMCarter
The pressure was on 1st grade. History had told us that after a victory against a top team the previous week, ANU would slump to a sad loss. The first half started slowly and lazily and ANU 1st grade went into the sheds at halftime 1 goal down. It seemed as though history would repeat, but the Rats prevailed with strong performances and goals by Andrew Blackman (1) and Bruce Mikkelsen (2). Final score 4-3 ANU.

Wasn't pretty, and again we had the lion's share of possession. Fortunately the continued pressure finally paid off with a goal to Luke with about 10 minutes to go.

RB incited a fight and got a yellow card for being kicked, that was fun to watch.

Ruben 1,

What a difference a week makes, after about 2 minutes we were 2 nil up and looking like doing a checks to Vikings. Gus had stepped up to the plate to take a short in the fist minute and creamed it into the backboard so hard it left the Vikings a little stunned. When he cracked a second just inside the right post a minute later they were even quieter. We then played all over them for quite a time without converting. To their credit they started to play themselves back into the game. They then put one in against the run of play and it was 2 - 1 at half time (I think). Early in the second half we converted again off a short after Nick slapped in a rebound off one of Gus’s hits. They then scored 2 goals and got bit of a run on. It took a bit of fight to keep the little buggers down and we traded goals with Hamish pushing in after a good build up of passes. Bruce then finally sealed it with a nice finish after a great run from James down the wing the get us home.

A big improvement on last week, with Gus and Ruben strong in defense and the forwards creating good opportunities especially James making runs down the right wing. Next week bring on Wests!

B&F: good question
Well, would've been an interesting game if we had someone who new more than just the new rules.
In a scrappy game on the beach front we struggled to lose this one. The goal line bounced between
the two teams and ended up the same as we started, on level peggings. They had one goal disallowed
We had multiple goals canned. They picked up heaps of shorts, we managed to squeeze out one.
Defenders had a blinder of a game with only about 3 slip ups. Karl was most welcome in a keeper role. The forwards were a bit lacking, we need to focus on getting/building up our inners.

ANU M-CL6 vs Tuggeranong
Round 2SAT4-Apr3:15 PMPowell
Tuggers 1 - ANU 0

So, we had a full team of players 15 minutes before the start time and then had 12 before first whistle. People knew positions before taking the field and tactics were being discussed. The new blood has brought a sense of direction and purpose to CL6. How fantastic is that????

Then we took on Tuggers and took on the umpires and then Tuggers took on the umpires and then we took on the umpires and then eventually we all remembered that it was hockey we were playing and just hoped that the umpires would catch up to the concept.

First half as 50/50 and we had some fantastic displays of defense including Joe who had made an appearance in the half line. Second half we had 75% of the play but just couldn't put it in the net. Hu had a great chance and has learnt that the post is his friend!

Again an amazing effort. Stuart and Gerrard made some fantastic moves in the mid field and Dave made spectacular saves in goals. No B&F points because I'm too lazy to bring paper to matches - Calvin are you coming back?

On what apears to be a black day for ANU men's hockey - 1st grade's 2-0 is now 2-1. It is now said that we are the Robin Hoods of Hockey, continually taking points of the big ritch teams, and handing them to the minnow poor teams, with a shock loss to St. Pats. With 6 Players down, even the return of the legendary Ben Bishop couldn't stop the bleeding as the ANU 1st XI hemorrhaged to a 5-3 loss.

Ugh. Let's not do that again. Great pace for the first 10 minutes, up 2-0. Spud celebrated joining our team by scoring within 15 seconds of the game after crash tackling their centre half and running to the top of the circle to score. This, as you could imagine, put Wests on the back foot for some considerable time. We managed to create lots of chances but didn’t convert until a good set of passes ended up with James pushing in a goal with Spud giving it a helping hand over the line. It was 2 nil at half time but could have been more.

Wests were starting to work themselves into the game but were not able to convert any changes due to some good scrambling defence and great work by Karl in goals. We had a couple of chances but couldn’t put anymore goals on the board.

In the last 20 seconds we let in a very soft goal to make it 2-1. A wins, a wins, a win.

Glory be, battle brothers. An auspicious day to do battle! The sun shining, and our enemies cowering before our might! Soothsayers fortold of glory and heads of central players on spikes as songs were sung of our valour when we would march triumphantly into the hallowed grounds of the hockey centre bar.

And glory there was, though the soothsayers got it wrong, much like the weather. We peppered the goal like chilli sauce on wedges from the Union food court, and we might as well have been playing half field hockey for the amount of time we kept the ball up the business end. Sadly our finishing was all too disappointing. We played like the goals were 10 metres wide, putting shots left, and right, even when the goalkeeper graciously stepped aside for us to put it in.

On a happier assessment, our midfield play was a joy to behold, with unselfish play knitting passes together like a scarf made by a grandmother with exalted ranks in weavecraft. Our keeper had a single touch all game, our fullbacks studied the newspaper and played gin rummy while Rob, Luke and Fraser kept the ball firmly forward of the halfway line. Fresh meat Gerrard ran his guts out and was a keen runner in the inners, and scooped a goal for his trouble. Other flank inner Pat also ran well, sneaking a goal through the keepers legs.

Pathy made some great passing moves through the field and moved into space well, but wayward shooting put himself on the jug buyers list. Rohan took on Spud's weighty mantle at centre forward and setup the wings with some deft placements. Cam held his space out on the wing well and made some great runs, cutting the base line nicely.

Overall the result was well deserved, but we seriously should have flogged them at least 6 nil, and have taken at least one head on a spike.

Round 3SAT18-Apr9:30 AMCarter
It was early. As it turns out, too early. Even though we had much of the paly (again) we were unable to defeat Tuggers 2 going down 1-3. The defence was amazing with Dave providing strong directions that were followed well and Mark who saved us again and again with some amazingly skillfull tackles. Tim was a stand out in the forward line and if we'd got the ball to him more often (that means passing people - if we call we pass!!!) the result probaly would have been a different story.

I think it was Tim who scored our goal but I am more than happy to be corrected. Once again I am thankful for the enthusiasm in the team. With a few more games I reckon we're in with serious finals quality hockey. Oh, and yes, if only we would follow Gareth's advice and go to training *grin*

PS Calvin was back but apparently we're going to do B&F at the end of the season because we're all too lazy to bring paper. I like to think of it as we're all putting our effort into the game and just letting the adminstration happen.....

LOSS 1-2 The monkey is off our back. We can now relax as we will not play the whole season undefeated. A loss for us is usually followed by a lot of negative feelings - this was not the case this time. We had our chances to win and at least draw in this game. In the end St Pats's freshness proved the difference with their best player taking advantage of our tiring defenders and scoring an individual goal to win the game. With so many players unavailable it was always going to be a tough game. Thanks to Alice, Sarah, Caitlin, Kate, Jemma and Georgia who doubled up from 2nd grade in the game immediately before ours.

ANU 2 def Queanbeyan 1

Goals: Lucy, Cass
B&F: Jess R, Cass, Lou

We are all finally starting to remember each other's names, which has made a massive difference to how we play!

We looked strong in attack all game, with passing coming together, better talking on the field and great positioning. We probably should have scored a few goals in the first half but for some reason it just wasn't coming together for us.

Queanbeyan scored early in the second half with our defenders caught out. However, their goal went against play and we knew that we'd catch up.

Both of our goals came in the last 5 min - one scored by Lucy after a fierce hit by Jess that the goalie trapped on her pads, but the ball dropped down for Lucy to tap in to finally give us the equaliser. The second was scored by Cassidy with what can only be described as a Karen Hardy-esque belt at the goals.

Thanks to Fran, Karen and Kirsten for doubling up from 4th grade, and also thanks to Suz, Nell and Mardi who had already played a game of 2s that morning.

We only had a few chances in attack and we didn't convert.

They had more shorts and shots but their younger players didn't have the fire power to put away the goals. Macca also made some nice saves, and Hinds and co. make a few nice above shoulder saves on the line.

The draw puts us at 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses after 4 rounds, which makes a pretty average start to the season. We need to slot away some wins before the big darby day after Hawiian night!

The team were clearly impressed by this demonstration and were having no part of a similar display. 10 goals later, all to the good guys, they had shown how hockey should be played.

Hockey on a Friday night, in the rain at Tuggeranong.

Valleys spent maybe 5 min of the whole game in their attacking 25. Georgia didn't touch the ball and there were no defensive short corners.

By the last 10 minutes it was a struggle to see, let alone pass. The rain was almost horizontal, stinging, and straight into our eyes in attack. Our attack looked sharp and passes were hard and accurate. It's fantastic to see us coming together as a team more and more each game.

Hindsy was more creative this week, instead of getting himself sent off, Sparrow sent Ricka off for 5mins due to Hinds sideline chat. No warnings which was a bit harsh.

We had few attacking plays, a few open passes into the D and a defender would scramble in and spoil at the last minute.

Our defence was pretty solid and their goal was pretty scrappy on the line.

We've won 1 from the first 5, the slow start continues. Two tough games next in Checks and ANU3.2's could be what it takes to turn us around.

CL4.1 beat Wests 2-1

Goals: Ollie 1, Wests defenders (claimed by Banks) 1
B&F: Vic, Ollie, Chuds

Played a sublime first 15 minutes. Totally dominated possession and territory, and you guessed it, no goals. Then Wests scored. "Frustration" does not even begin to describe that situation. Perhaps "F#$@^&%$$^%k" might. I looked up "finishing" in the Macquarie dictionary and found its definition lacking. Nowhere did it say, "the ability to turn many good passing forays in the attacking 25 into goals". Maybe the guys who wrote the dictionary played for ANU and hadn't come across the concept.

We did eventually figure out that the way past the goalie was over him, and managed to flick a short corner towards the Wests post man who panicked when he saw one of those hated slow, bouncy, dribbly, impossible-to-trap balls heading towards him. 1-1. Finally, in a farcical episode involving the ball bouncing off 7 Wests defenders (would you believe 5?) after Banksy had hit it somewhere in the circle, the ball managed to dribble into the goal for the winner.

Many thanks to the best looking umpire in mens hockey, Miss Lou, who started the match on her lonesome due to Tuggers not providing an umpire (Aunty, please note for SCC), and Liam's little brother Sean who did a fantastic job filling in until we could find an umpire over the age of 13. If you could drink, we'd owe you a beer :)

CL5 ANU defeated Queanbeyan/Wests 3-2

G&F: The team has democratically elected to allow me to despotically decide who played the best. Conflict of interest much? Muwahaha.

1st: Spud
2nd: Johnny
3rd: Matt and/or Leon, they both played well.

Ahh, yeah... gotta love a 7.45pm time slot at Tuggeranong. Oh well, the night wasn't too cold and the umpiring wasn't terrible. Thanks to Kurto for doing the task.

We managed to execute some finishing for a change... Spud clearly decided to keep the ball on the ground this week, putting in all 3 of our goals. Probably a good decision after putting one over the crossbar last week. We had many good chances, with Rohan testing the keeper with a play that cut through two lines of defenders, and Johnny also made the keeper work to keep the game running away from them. Spud also put several crosses into the D for Jason to miss catching by very slim margins.

It could have gone horribly wrong though, with Q/W getting the first goal, and when we equalised they countered quickly with another lead making goal. We managed to conjure up a nice break away down the right to force our way to another equaliser, and some soft Q/W defense saw Rohan steal the ball, carry it into the circle and pop it to Spud to break us into the lead.

With only a few minutes left in the game, we earned a short corner and we used that to run the clock into nothing, allowing a solid sigh of relief. It felt good to get a comeback win after 2 weeks of draws.

Awesome play by Gerrard, Stuart, Dave, Tim (we love you honey) and Mark was all right when he was standing on his feet and not on his arse (get new shoes!!). Gareth found some awesome space and placing so we are now expecting great things! Fantastic work and Paul - ZOMG you were everywhere! Aaron - lovely to see you there - some great play and before I mention everyone - wait - Bowey good to see you too - Scott lovely work and Panthy - nice adjusting to the back line. And Hellyer - pleasure as always! Okay...now I've really annoyed someone by forgetting. B&F heavily focussed around our defense which reflected to state of the game. Gus gave us an early lead with a nice short corner conversion. But we were under the hammer and let 3 goals in despite some good defense and keeping. We played much better in the second half and scored a consolation goal but didn't really look like stealing it. Not really our best game.

B&F (voted by players this week):

Goals: Spud 2, Jason (probably) 1.
Ouch. Literally. Checks thumped us down 6-1 in the first half and we didn't really seem to have an answer for their solid midfield play. As usual they'd appeal any decision they thought they could milk for advantage, even when they clumsily brutalised our players with dangerous stick wailing. The game was ugly and spiraling into a slugfest that both sides were happy to oblige.

We managed to claw some respect back by winning the second half 2-1 but only a spectatular rally was going to ever change the result. We did muster some nice build up through our inners but some rough positioning hurt our finishing. Highlight of the second half was Spud breaking away in something of a solo effort only to be annihilated at the top of the circle by a checks defender that had no intention of playing the ball. Stroke awarded and converted.

A game I'm happy to drown the memory of away.

Firstly - Thanks to Rob Solomon for umpiring. You have to love it when the umpires fail to show for the late game......You'd think the Senior Competition Committee would be onto the slack umpires by now....wait...that's me...Um.....

Secondly - How fantastic are we??? We won 6-2 although it was touch and go for a while. Took the forwards a little while to work it all out but when they did it was poetry. The passing, the sharing, the composure. Wow. Pathy - you were everywhere man and it was beautiful to watch! Again people did really playing where they weren't used to, and then Dave - who was where we love him to be - a brilliant save shoulder height off the stick and over the back line. Awesome keeping! Mark was his usual brilliant self and we must be doing something right if the left half is comfortable going up and scoring a goal! Tim scored 2, Stuart (our star CH) 1 and our new comer, Julian 2. After trash talk, some nursing some sore heads from the previous evening of Hawaiian night,

DERBY DAY ARRIVED!

All waited in anticipation for the gigantuan struggle that was about to unfold and who would come out with a herculean effort to emerge victorious!
Alas to no avail, a seesawing battle was fought and neither team came out with the bragging rights, ANU II had a number of opportunities throughout the 1st half, one shot which was sent into the Southwell Park car park, but due to great scrambling defence from ANUI, II's were kept scoreless, some structured play saw ANUI into the circle early in the 2nd half, a short, goal! It was then all scrambling defence and tight marking by ANUI as ANUII feverishly tried to pull back the goal and advance for their first victory of the season. Strong defence from both teams saw the opportunities few and far between, and as the final whistle approached ANUII took the opportunity and a shot or pass (Chappy is still claiming it was a pass) and defelection from Ross saw the me pulling the ball out of the net and teams all tied up and thats how it staued a few late drives but all in all a good game and a fair result, now just to get those wins so can meet again in the GF and have someone come out with the bragging rights!

Good win (any win is a good win) against some keen skilful youngsters.

We welcomed back Spud again from CL5 and he again opened our scoring. Although he waited a little longer than his 15 second scoring effort the last time he rejoined us. A nice little looping shot over the keeper a Spud special? We then scored a second goal through either Gus or Rob (I can’t remember) and went in 2-0 at half time having had the better of the play. In the second half they matched it with us but we managed to get a third to be safe (Gus or Rob) half way through the half before Hamish pushed in a bonus goal in the last minute.

This was much better than last week, with pretty good performances across the park with nearly everyone getting B&F votes.

ANU M-CL5 vs North Canberra
Round 7SAT16-May6:15 PMPowell
ANU defeated Norths 2-0
B&F
1st: Fraser
2nd: Rob
3rd: Rohan

Fairly convincing win against an opponent of mixed skills. We put on a good first half with plenty of solid attack but seemed to tire in the second half. No one had a bad game and our mistakes were quite few. Everyone in the team was enthusiastic and put in a determined effort for the full 70. Once again our midline did the lion's share of the work, with Fraser controlling his half well. Rohan controlled the centre until Johnny showed up at half time and took over.

The real star of the day was Leon, with the ability to control the ball with what seemed like shear will alone. The ball stuck to his stick and he weaved through opposition players, and distributed the ball nicely. Rob seemed to have a belly full of fire, made several attacking runs from the back line. He was solid at the back as usual and dismantled several Norths attacking plays.

Our build up to score goals continues to improve, and hopefully our finishing will come to the party soon. We probably should have been 3 up at half time, having plenty of good chances go begging, and even further away at the final.

We're firmly at the business end of the ladder, and hopefully we'll crest out of the clud cover and pass Pats to take first place this week.

Only two teams played up at Lyneham this weekend, and we were lucky enough to be one of them. The 9.30pm timeslot wasn't so lucky.

We ran on the field enthusiastic, determined to improve upon our first round's effort against Checks. This game and that one were like chalk and cheese...well, our performance anyway. Checks pretty much played the same - its just that we've gotten better.

Even after a couple of very interesting excuses for short corners against us (you could say the umpires were properly disinterested...or crap) we maintained our intensity. We were strong in the midfield and defence, with the likes of Harry, James, Steve and Chris making great leads in the middle and high up.

Karl deserved every one of his 31 (yep, thirty one) B&F points: it was like watching some pepped up ninja...he was everywhere at once with his glove and his stick going everywhere!

All in all, a great improvement on the first round's statistical abberation. If we can improve by nine goals again next time we meet Checks we'll beat them by two!
ANU M-CL5 vs Central
Round 8SAT23-May12:15 PMKjar
ANU defeated Central 2-0

Goals: Ben Lodder, Fraser Inwood.

For a side that's on the bottom of the ladder, this Central team shoudn't be too underestimated. They had solid fullbacks who weren't afraid of the biffo, and a centre half with some handy skills. Thankfully, their feeble excuse for an attack (that included ex-ANU player Peter Boal and several other veteran players that looked like they fought in WW2) never stood a snowflake's hope in a Victorian Bushfire against our solid backline.

We were knocking on the door of the goal circle all game, but their as mentioned defense was reasonably up to the task and managed to keep us from mowing them down. Their keeper was twitchy, aggressive and eager and kept them in the game.

As for our guys, no one made any mistakes. Ben managed to get himself a nice, behind the play goal on the end of some nice midfield build up. Left unmarked, he managed to find himself with the ball at the baseline and took his chance to take us ahead. Fraser, as usual, had a blinder and is one of the team's stalwarts. His solid, patient style works well and he was comfortable in both attack and defense. To top it off, he found himself open on the left of the goal circle, lined his stick up and slammed home a glorious strike. He later had a similar oppertunity on the right side off the back of a short corner, and everyone thought for all the world we'd be 3-0 up... but sometimes shots don't go where we want them to, especially on the atrocious Kjar surface.

The defensive formation of Rob and Evan has gelled really well and it's great to know there's a pair of safe defenders at the back.

We could have made a wider margin on the scoreboard, but the end result was telling of how badly he Central team didn't want to give up. They played hard right to the end, even though they were convinced they were never really in it.
ANU M-CL6 vs Tuggeranong
Round 8SAT23-May7:45 PMKjar
ANU v Tuggers I 0 - 0

What a game! There was blood, sweat and tears. And that was only from Mel after some ungentlemanly thug cleaned her up. (I hope you didn't need too many stitches) From everyone else there was just sweat, sweat and sweat.

Tuggers average over 6 goals a game and let in less than a goal a game. So to keep them to 0-0 was a fantastic effort. Despite Mel's pre-game talk about keeping the ball wide and not playing to Tugger's strength down the middle, the game was played 90% down the middle. Which as it turned out was fine as Tuggers kept trying the same old thing down the middle and our defence came at them in waves and stopped every attack. The tackling back was a sight to behold as our players repeatedly tackled their players, covered back, cut off their options and stifled their attack. The few times they got a shot off Dave was on hand in a sterling performance. Mel and Pathy were everywhere and the halves earned their pay. All their shorts were to naught as our runners monstered the receiver.

In the end Tuggers were arguing amongst themselves, particularly the obligatory Tuggers player who can be best described as "an angry young man".

So all in all a very satisfying performance.

and as a supplementary match report..... University Angels U-7 v St Pats 3-1. (Liam 3 goals)

Another fine effort by the boys and girls in yellow and blue (and pink and.....). No goals to my little Aiden (aged 3 years and 1 month), but at least this week he managed to keep his mouth guard in all game and usually hit the ball in the right direction. (The most common form of parental encouragement from the sidelines goes something along the lines of ... {insert name} you're going the wrong way...) Imogen (5 1/2) is becoming less shy on the field. So all in all a fun morning for kids and parents.

We play every Saturday 0930-1030 (U-7) or 1030-1130 (U-9) at Kaleeen (off Ashburton Cr). So if you have any little kids bring them along!

Bit of a frustrating game, it always seems to be against Tuggers. We had many early chances that went untaken in the first 20 minutes before they put in a goal completely against the run of play. 0 – 1 at half time was not really what we would have liked.

In the second half we pulled our figure out a played much more aggressive positive hockey. Bruce in his final game for 4 years managed to get 1 goal, 1 vote and 1 yellow card. Good luck in Beirut, Bruce! His goal was good finishing on the back of a good run through the middle by James. Our second goal was a Gus short corner that he drove into the keeper and it dribbled through into the goal.

Great game by Reuben once again, who together with Gus, held our defence together.

I think we will now be 3rd on the ladder with a goal percentage of around 50%. We are winning a lot of games by 1 goal. But, it is good that we are winning the games that we should be to keep us in finals contention.

2-0 down early on and things were looking ugly, but we hung in there, even got it to 3-2 at one stage. Better than it could have been but for a poor start. Positives were that fullbacks Vic and Denis had great games, probably coz they had so much work to do. Charlie played his best one so far. And the short corner battery continues to produce. Apologies to CL3 for working their players somewhat harder than expected....

ANU M-CL5 vs Tuggeranong
Round 9SAT30-May6:15 PMKjar
Anu drew against Tuggeranong 2-2

Goals: Cam Popple, Stuart Gardner

Our goals were awesome examples of team work and build up. Our first goal was a piece of passing brilliance that started with some movement up the right, Stuart passing from the circles edge to Rohan near the top, who passed to a wide, wide open Cam who thumped the ball in cool as you like.

Their goals were awesome examples of pure unadulterated assy luck. How they got the ball to go from being a foot outside the right post, to spinning into the goal will amaze me all season. Their second goal was also assy but I think we got a bit down hearted by the abysmal attempt at umpiring from Qbn and ADFA. The less said about that the better.

2-1 down, and it looked like we were going to have to wear a loss with the clock rapidly approaching the beer gong. Some of our attack pressure finally cracked through though, and Rohan slipped through the defenses and crossed the ball to Stuart who made no mistake and slammed in a fantastic clutch goal with 45 seconds left on the clock.

Player for player, we outclassed the lot of them, except for maybe Aaron their midfielder who sometimes joins ANU players in summer hockey. They didn't mark us much at all, their tackles were clumsy and easy to evade, and drawing frees from them would have been a breeze, had the ADFA umpire known what an infringement looked like.

We were unlucky to let two goals in, but were lucky to get our draw making goal back, so karma seems to be in balance... but with some decent umpires and some of our regular players back from unavailable land, we would have smashed Tuggs to pieces.

Dara are sitting nestled comfortably on the bottom of the table in 3's and we really should of accounted for them to cement a place in the top 4, as always Dara like a scrap and though have had no wins this season all ther matches have been realtively close. ANU in the end were lucky to come away with the draw but must say that some dubious decisions and a lack of whistle blowing was frustrating for both teams and I personally would like to thank the post.
The 3rd grade table is now more crowded than Christmas Island at high tide.
So ANU with that game out of the way need to get the winning attitude back, overcome the cold weather and press for some convincing wins to get the points.

I think you know the story. It’s been told many times before. It’s an ANU special. We are playing the bottom team. We have a thousand opportunities to score, especially in the first half, but didn’t get one. They get a stroke, when Gus tried to ‘catch the ball’ on the line, and it’s all over.

A really good game from Stuart making some good runs and setting set up many opportunities, which we didn’t take. There was also some great running from James on the wing again. Reuben, as usual, saved us at the back and Gus actually did some short passes in the second half. Thanks for Luke, for helping out.

It’s Rusty’s last game this week and he wants those 4.1 slackers to go down!

So this week:

ANU CL5 drew with Daramalan 2-2

Goals: Cam Popple, Jason Lee

B&F: As arbitarily decided by Rohan

1st: Nick Millar (ran his guts out and made space all game)
2nd: Cam Popple (scored his second goal in as many games and fought well up front. Also got a head injury for his trouble)
Tied 3rd: Fraser Inwood and Rob Lavis (Both played a rock solid defense at the back and kept us in it)

What a nasty bunch Dara decided to send to face off against us today. Angry men in desperate need of therapy. I apparently chipped the tooth of their centre half back in 2007 and he's still sore about it. He must have told his friends because they all seemed to want an oppertunity to puff their chests out at me.

Agrovation aside, the game was serviced well by mostly reasonable umpiring, certainly had worse recently. Plenty of bad tackles from Dara meant we just preferred to play around them rather than through them, which worked very well through the right by Fraser, Pat and Julian.

Our corner strategies were stark contrasts at each end of the field. Our attacking corners were smooth and well executed, and each one created an oppertunity and excluded the defenders. The other end was not so tight. Both Dara's goals came from corners and worse, direct hits from the top. With some time spent on corner defense and some speedier runners in the goals we'll sort that out quick smart.

Passing was fluid through the midfield and 1-2 work paid dividends. We had gobs of space at the front and pressured the circle on several occasions. Nick had a cracker at centre forward and continues to shine with his solid endurance. Cam made no mistake when given his goal scoring chance in the first half, nailing home a solid cracker.

What hurt us this week was a lack of subs, and again, regulars off in other duties. Dara are notorious for their dogged determination and ball hungry attitude. Some fresh legs off the bench might have made the result telling. Having Evan at the back would have allowed us to push Fraser forward and moving the midfield from merely solid to formidable. Leon's recent performance in the midfield would have been very handy too.

This Dara side is strong enough to be finals material, and we'll like have to see them again.

History is written by the winners, they say. So the following report must be an accurate reflection of what took place! But, as Ollie so quickly pointed out it's probably reasonable for those less victorious to have a brief right-of-reply. Here is how the CL4 Derby transpired in the eyes (and very sore head) of your humble scribe...

The 4.2's won (2 goals) against the 4.1's (1 goal). Appropriate really.

We could probably be accused of playing some hockey out there in this game. That's quite something really and you can't accuse us of it often. There were early passes, people in space, people making leads and people making solid tackles and clearances in defence. It became apparent very early on that mismatched uniforms and hangovers (well, I can really only speak for myself on that front) seemed to be the key. Can't think what else it could have been...

Stuart deserved his B&F votes. His leads were perfect and his tenacity inspiring. There were many occasions where it didn't look like he'd break through a tackle and all of a sudden he was out the other side making a beeline for the circle.

Chris's goal, the first, was a sight for sore eyes. He didn't need anyone's help...it started with a run from the defensive right half right breaking through two or so opposition players up to the circle with a beautiful textbook-style nut from about 5cm inside the circle. Hamish's goal shortly after secured us the lead heading into the second half.

The 4.1's put up a bit of a fight. Their inners and high forwards made some good runs but were stopped dead by the talents of the likes of Super Fullbacks Gus and Reuben. Although they did, as the score card shows, get one through but that's inconsequential and doesn't really need to be addressed. And it must be said that it could have been a different game if they didn't lose a couple of players during the match: Ollie exercised his talent at acquiring injuries by rolling his ankle and in goals Clive bowed out with a foot injury also that didn't look like it tickled.

All in all a good game to be part of. Our tame umpires Gav and Lou pulled out good performances, too, and didn't even have to send anyone off. The small but dedicated band of supporters added to the atmosphere - cheers guys!

And so I'll wait to see how Ollie/CL4.1 responds. But for now this is it from this scribe - that was my last game, I'm heading off for a year or so. It's been a blast playing with you all in the 4.2's and I expect to read of victory come finals time. So long, and thanks for all the hockey.

Rusty out.

F*&^, #u%k, #@c*... and that's not the reaction to a defeat rooted firmly in a crappy first 10 minutes of the game in which we let in 2 goals. That's the reaction to a growing injury list which looks like a crowded emergency room at Goodwin Homes and sees a combined 1758 games* of ANU hockey watching from the sidelines. Oh well, at least we're giving a few 5th graders a chance to show their wares in 4th grade.

We came, we saw, we conquered. As Mark said at the end of the match "Let's look at the posistive - that is out best result this season!" You see, we weren't quite as classy as we can be but we performed and got the results. A big thank you to George Das who did some amazing saves in goals - indlucing one off the stick while lying on the ground. And Hellyer - you're buying the beer next time! You promised everytime you scored! Oh, and our gorgeous Tim converted the other 5. And no - no one else can have him, or Huw, or Garreth, or Aaron, or Scott, or any of CL6 - they totally rule as we are!!! Oh - thanks to Calvin for popping his head in again - always a joy to see you especially when you get excited seeing an ANU team that passes and converts!

2 nil down after 10 minutes and things weren't looking fantastic. We dug in, and surprisingly they sat back allowing us to settle. Patience and possession finally reaped results as a sublime through ball from Hindsy saw Sven through onto goal to cut the lead back to 1. Bareja drew us level with a clinical finish when he was left wide open on a penalty corner.

2 each at the half and our heads were up. After a typically impassioned halftime plea from captain Compton to "...please not lose this one" we came out and continued to impress. Tim picked up an intercept on the defensive 25, went through 2 hapless defenders, had only the keeper to beat before being molested in typical Michael Jackson fashion by the keeper and a hard chasing Checks defender. Mick stepped up and converted the duly awarded stroke. Checks then managed to get back even with a softish goal from a penalty corner. 4 minutes to go, and after some sustained pressure and a number of corners, slick (fortunate?) passing in the circle enabled Hindsy to turn and convert from close range for the win.

Overall a great result considering our start and general tendency not to run games out. Tim was by far our best in the middle of the park and deserved the points.

This loss has really put the blow torch on us and really have to get the intensity up to remain in contention for the 4. They put a lot of players around the ball and relied on their speed and fitness which was a telling factor, we have to play our game moving the ball around and tight defence and get back in the winner's circle. A weekend off to get our heads in order as all were very dissapointed with the result.

A solid win from the CL5 boys this week. Special thanks to Gerrard, Garreth and Dave for backing up for us with so many out. Thanks also to Kurto for blowing hte whistle.

Unic made us show our talent in this game, with as many as 7 of their players also showing up for the 4th grade game straight after (apparently including a 2nd grade women's player), a testiment to the (apparent) quality of opposition we had to face off against.

As usual, we held the midfield quite strongly due to our solid backline of Evan and Rob allowing us to play Fraser further forward at centre half. Leon played a cracker as usual in the inners and managed to have a bit of juice left in the tank to play 4th grade afterwards.

Our goals could be described as works of art. Our first one deserved sending a nod out to Spud for his training session this week. Pat hammered a screamer in from the right wing near the 25, which was met with a glorious deflection from Rohan on the spot. It looked so professional that we'll probably never see another one again.

Our second one came from a bit of luck with play from our forwards commiting their keeper to the top of the circle. They foolishly failed to mark Julian who was waiting on the post for a desperation pass. It managed to find him, and Julian calmly guided the ball into the goal.

By this point, the Femme umpire must have decided the result was a foregone conclussion and started to blow the whistle from the UC circle, even when Kurto blew the odd short corner. Turns out we only needed one umpire down that end anyway.

Good result, which we sorely needed, on the back of a couple of losses lately.

We went, we played (sort of) and lost 2-0. A few things were learnt - like when we all agree to go wide and use short passes, we really should try that rather than belting the ball around...However, there were again some beautiful passages of play and we were down three regulars which always changes the dynamics. Special mention to Dave for some bloody awesome work in goals and thanks to Aunty and Stephen for filling in. Also Paul who did some excellent work wiht clean tackles which really on someone less skilful would have ended up very ugly indeed.

A lead up of much anticipation with this match, with 3.1s needing to put this one in the bag to remain hopeful for the finals. A strong defensive first half kept 3.2s away from any easy scoring opportunities as well as our quick play the ball allowing the elder statesmen within 3.2s to tire quite easily. 3.1s attacking prowess became stronger and started to create many more opportunities within the circle. With an awesome display of speed and attack from Stuey, who set up both goals for Sam G and Mitch to lead 3.1s to a much deserved victory.

We won! Yay!

ANU CL5 defeated Norths 4-0

Goals:
Cam Popple (2)
Leon Foster
Jason Lee

A solid, resounding win. Very esteem boosting. Norths were never really in it, especially after putting 3 goals in during the first half. 2 of them came from corners and our set move worked really well. We had several corners and would have probably got more goals in if the sand didn't suck the life out of the pushouts. The first goal was a corner converstion. Jason pushed out to Rohan who committed the 1st runner nicely. A quick lay off to Leon left him wide open to hammer in a screamer. Cam scored the next two goals, one off a break away and the other off a corner. A smooth corner execution put Cam in space this time and he smash one at the keeper. It deflected off two Norths players before popping over the line.

We only managed one goal in the second half, but it was all quality. We made a nice build up down the right which culminated in a great run from Ben Lodder, who nailed a sweet cross to Jason on the other post for a simple tap in.

We kinda took our foot off the gas in the second half, but thankfully Norths didn't step up. We're in the 'mathematical' chance of getting into the finals at this point, but hope springs eternal.

Goals: Sven (3), Gav, Shorty, Rick

With no Leaky Tap Fawcett up front, the goal scoring responisibilties fell to Sven, he responded with 3 hard fought goals, woo...

After referring Rick's short corner goal to the OGRB (Own Goal Review Board), with a decision of 6-5 in favour, the goal has been confirmed as legitimate and the stat duly attributed to the big man. In a first for the OGRB, 2 goals needed scrutinising this weekend, with Shorty's effort also deemed dubious. Despite sideline calls for the goal to be awarded to Jemma, technically Shorty did touch it last before the Tuggers defender calmly converted it from close range.

Gav piped in after a great intercept by Stu saw them 2 on 1 with the keeper.

A good win, and our last game out at the Thunderdome

Lars was a very welcome addition to the team and did some great work in the half back line - as well as up forward.

Goal: Tim Hoar

It was a battle for second position on the ladder and we needed a win to get ahead of Tuggers II (ANU on 33 points and Tuggers II on 34 points coming into the match).

It was another tough and gritty game and this Tuggers II team have improved during the season. It was an unfortunate goal that Tuggers got, came of the keeper's kickers and a Tugger's player got hold of it infront of goal and put it into the far post.
A great stick save by Scotty McNamara on the last line of defence, stopping the ball with his stick at chest height (during a short corner if I remember correctly) - that really kept the team in it.

ANU got the reply goal early in the second half and it was pretty tight after that for the rest of the match. ANU had a short corner after the siren, but unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net.

UC next week at the lovely timeslot of 9:30pm for our first game on Carter. We need Tuggers II to either draw or loose and us to win against a stacked UC team to get the double chance going into September.

For the first 10 minutes it seemed it would be all flash and no fire as the opposition fullback and our attack traded threatening strikes. Finally all the good work started to result in goals - 3-0 at half time.

Highlights from the second half included 4 more goals, the opposition fullback finally scoring a hit with one of her strikes (thankfully hitting one of her own players) and Caitlin (our goalkeeper) deciding to test out the new self hit rule herself.

An impressive win, that is made more impressive by the scope for improvement from this side. A few more similar results and we may need to reassess our goals.

No list of the goal scorers this week, as that would downplay the efforts of the rest of the team who ensured it was three clean sheets in a row.

Six wins in a row
Cold Georgia touched the ball once
We kicked ADFA ass

With apologies to Shakespeare (sonnet No 18):

Shall I compare threes to an ADFA team?
Thou art more lovely and more skill’d:
Cold nights do make shake the hands of play,
And Season’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too rough the girls of ADFA play,
And oft’ the calls do not go threes’ way’
And every shot on short sometimes denies,
By chance or nature’s changing course of sway:
But thy teamwork and great calls shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that ball thou owest’
Nor shall Whistle stop thou momentum in the game,
When in eternal winning scorelines though growest:

So long as (wo)men can breathe, or legs can flee,
So long lives hockey, and hockey gives life to thee.

ANU W5's 0 - Central 2

Helen was strong in goals making early calls and clearing the ball well. Robin and Rowie found the forwards with some good hitting out of defence.

The mids and forwards attacked with pace but could not convert.

Central had a few really good players that were hard to stop. The damage was done in the 1st half with 2 goals down. Good to hold out nil all in the 2nd half.

Robin continues to be OK!

B&F:

1st: Meri
2nd: Tash
3rd: Sophie

We went into this game with a serious 'have to win' attitude. Languishing in 7th on the ladder with a 3-1-3 record, we realised we either need to pull our finger out and win some games or we'll just end up rolling over and coasting through the rest of the season having hit and giggle hockey.

No, freaking way. 15 players showed up and the instructions were clear. Run, run, run until your legs fall off. Better yet, run until their legs fall off.

We went out, grabbed the game by the... ears... and dragged it off home. Our midfield and attack worked well together and we took ball into the circle hard many times.

Meri continued her carve-em-up style of running that made the opposition tacklers look incompetant. Tash busted a gut and ran all game, including a great piece of short corner defense that saw her run back from half way to put on a play stopper. Emma put our short corner practise to good use by nabbing a scraps goal near the keeper. Katie plucked a save out of the air that shut down central's angry pink stick clutching wilderbeast. It was lovely, because the muppet was trying to dig a glory goal out for herself to level the game, and it was great to see the agro axe swinging tackler fail. Love lost: nil.

And without being told, the four white girls executed the Pakistani defense superbly. Just try and score a goal through 11 defenders in the circle, Central, good luck. This held off the last few minutes of pressure Central could muster and we held out for the win.

ANU (with nine players) 2 def Tuggeranong (with eleven players) 1

We were not expecting anything too special since it was a Sunday night match down on Kjar and only nine ANU girls could make it to the match (big thanks to Kip for filling in). Despite the disadvantage in numbers, this did not hinder the ANU 3s from winning against Tuggeranong 2 - 1. In circumstances such as these once would normally believe it would be a case of Tuggeranong losing the match more than we were able to win it.

This was not the case - they were rubbish, and we beat them.

One reason for the win stands out: We passed the ball to our own players. The spectaculr feat eluded the opposition for much of the match and is generally thought to be a fundamental element to winning a game of hockey - being honest, sometimes we don't do this all that well.

While a normal Kjar match for us is a spank-and-tackle kind of affair, the match involved some good passing, leading and running from all our players.

It was actually one of the more fun matches to play despite the crappy time and venue - everyone ran hard and spirits were high for much of the game. I think the best and fairest would have been shared about - a strong effort from all our forwards and some solid work in defence. It would have been nice to put a few more shots away, but a win on the board before we go to the weird six-team stage of our competition is very nice.

Round 13SUN5-Jul7:15 PMWatt
Rare report for this grade.
4 Blues beat 4 Whites 2-1. (goals Karen 1, Kitty 1 & Ruth 1)
This was always going to be a bit of a tough game for both sides. The 4 Whites with everything to prove and the 4 Blues hanging on to a top 4 position. The game started in favour of the whites, they ran and ran, passed well and tried to take advantage over a sleepy 4 Blues. The first 25 minutes produced a penalty stroke from Tanya's foot and Ruth dropped the shot past Fran on the bottom left (well at least someone listens to me...). The game started to swing back to the 4 Blues in the last 10 minutes with them gaining momentum up to the half whistle. Kitty in the last 4 minutes, placed the first goal for the Blues after collecting the ball 1m outside the top and taking two steps for a shot (see, inners take note!).
The halftime break meant a bit of soul searching on the Blues side (and I suspect a great deal of encouragement and zest on the other side) plus denial of lollies privilages (actually we forgot...).
The second half started like the end of the first. The 4 Blues combining well and even using a few tricky ideas from the coach on the way through. The second goal was from a Karen special after a beautiful pass from the inners (again, see!*). The rest of the game was hard fought and a couple of morale goals** were scored by Karen and Ruth (either side). Karens' MG was a nice pick up and bunt into the goal. Ruths' MG was from a lifted ball and swatting it out of the air into the net.

Toodles.

* see Rohan's report about inners actually passing in mens CL5 above.
** morale goal equates to a coaches opinion that the goal was fair, but the umpire had other ideas.
*** whoops, sorry no extra point, but training is still on Thursdays/Wednesdays****
**** depends on grade - well not really but helps to train with your team.

APPENDUM:

Moral of this story: Games of Hockey are 70 minutes long, and the game usually goes to the team that doesn't turn over the ball too much in the second half.

Quotes in reference to white after the game:
'Wow, an ANU team that knows how to pass the ball!'
'Those guys are much stronger than last time we played them...'
'Dammit, Rohan didn't sub off Sophie this time.'

1-1 vs Central
Goal: Rik
B&F: TBA
A game that got away from us. In high winds and good spirits we took on what seemed to be an understrength side. We had most of the run of play in the first half were on the recieving end of a couple of interesting calls. Central managed a short corner and after a couple of shots managed to get the ball past Fran. On the back foot we pounded away at their circle until after a decisive moment pulling Karen off the field, we picked a short so Rik could slide one past the keeper.
The second half was fairly evenly matched between the 25's, though we penetrated the circle more often. Their keeper had a bit of a blinder stopping an enraged Karen in full flight and we were unlucky on a couple of occasions not to edge one into the goal. In a bizarre twist, the central team went on a 'go slow' in the last 10 minutes of play (they are under us on the table and we are ahead no matter what they do). Rather frustrating and a draw was the result.
We're still struggling in the offensive 25 soe more work at training.
